DC sandwich survey

I have gotten a lot of good responses to my sandwich query and am still compiling the results. In the meantime, if you have anything to add, please do so here!

  1. Vace, on Connecticut Avenue in Cleveland Park, has excellent subs.

  2. Here in North Carolina, sandwiches have a decidedly Southern bent. Probably the best regional sandwiches are pork BBQ, and there are hundreds of great places to get one. The best way to order a BBQ sandwich IMHO is with coleslaw and pickle. Usually, the small the town, the better the BBQ. You’re not going to find good ‘que in Charlotte, Raleigh, Durham, or Greensboro … you have to go out in the sticks like Smithfield, Lexington, Mebane, and dozens of other medium-sized towns with excellent local BBQ. I’ll try to put together a list for you Lisa! — Malcolm

  3. Incidently, sandwiches are one of my favorite foods. I actually had a
couple of sandwich parties, which in some circles are still talked
about. Awards were given for sandwiches in various categories. It all
stemmed from a dream I had where I kept running into people I knew who
were very bummed out for various reasons, (e.g., dog died, just broken
up) and I would say, “Oh, I am so sorry but I am having a sandwich party
and I really hope you will come.” Scot McKnight actually wrote a song
about it (and his wife one the sweepstakes award at the second party).

  4. To me, the best sandwiches start with exceptional bread and then build from there. Try the Breadline at Pennsylvania Ave and 18th St NW for a great sandwich experience.
